- Open the browser window. Locate the "Customize and control Google Chrome" icon (a set of three small horizontal bars) in the top right hand region of the browser window and click on it.
- A menu will appear. Look for "Settings" and click on it. This will open a new "Settings" tab.
- In the new tab, scroll to the end of the page and click on "Show advanced settings".
- More "Settings" will appear after performing the above action. One of them is "Privacy" under which you will find the "Clear browsing data" button. Click on this button to display the browsing data you would like to delete.
- The histories you can delete here include browsing history, download history, cookies, saved Autofill form data and saved passwords. You can also clear the browser cache, clear data from apps and de-authorize content licences.
- There are options of the periods of history you may like to delete which include: last hour, last day, last week, last 4 weeks or everything.
Alternatively, you may delete your browsing history on Chrome in the following ways:
To Delete Only Websites Visited
- Open the browser window. Click on the "Customize and control Google Chrome" icon (a set of three small horizontal bars ) in the top right hand area.
- Look for "History" in the menu that appears and click on it. This will open a tab that shows your browsing history. Or you can simply press Control + H to display the browsing history tab.
- You can then proceed to delete any particular history you want. You may want to delete just a couple of history records, history from only a particular day or only records from a particular website.
- This is especially important if you only want to only delete browsing history from a particular date or you want to delete a certain record. The history page has a search box where you can enter the search term for the history record you want.
To Delete Only Download History
- Open the browser window. Click on the "Customize and control Google Chrome" icon (a set of three small horizontal bars ).
- Look for "Downloads" in the menu that appears and click on it. This will open a tab that shows your download history. Alternatively, you can press Control + J to display the download history tab.
- Here you can choose to delete all downloads or delete particular downloads. You can search for a particular download record by using the search box provided on the page. To clear a particular download, locate it and click on the "Remove from list" option. To clear all downloads, click on the "Clear all" option in the top left hand area of the page.
On the other hand, you may choose not to allow the browser to save your browsing activities in the first place.
Prevent Browsing History from Being Stored
- Google Chrome comes with a feature called Incognito Mode. When you surf the internet using this mode, every record of your browsing is deleted once you close the window. This allows you to browse the web without having the websites you visit or downloads from being recorded. Cookies from the visited websites are also deleted.
- To open an Incognito window, click on the "Customize and control Google Chrome" icon (a set of three small horizontal bars ). Look for and select "New incognito window" from the displayed menu. This opens a new window. Alternatively, you can press Control + Shift + N.
- You can tell you are browsing in Incognito Mode by the image of a figure in hat and glasses in the top left hand corner.
- Even though this mode automatically deletes the records of the pages you visit and of your downloads, the downloaded files and bookmarks you create are preserved.
