Firefox 29 and 30: How to Delete All Browsing and Download History and Cookies

Mozilla has released a new and revamped Firefox - of which the first version was Firefox 29. The latest version is Firefox 30. It features a new UI called Australis. It looks a lot more like Google Chrome but with this new UI comes many changes to Firefox menus and settings. Regular Firefox users will find that many things are not where or how they used to be. However, the new Australis UI simplifies - and beautifies - many functions and deleting internet history and cookies is one of the functions made much simpler.
The following steps show how to go about deleting internet history on Firefox 29 - and these should work on subsequent updates/versions:
To Delete Most and All Browsing History
- Click on the Open menu icon in the top right hand corner - this icon is a set of three horizontal bars. Doing this will display a nice-looking menu with icons instead of a list.
- Click on the History icon - this icon is a clock. This action activates a sub-menu showing some of your last visited sites and a list of options at the top one of which is Clear recent history.
- Click on Clear recent history and a pop-up box appears in the center of the browser.
- The box offers a Time range to clear button which allows you to choose how much history you want to erase. The options include Last Hour, Last Two Hours, Last Four Hours, Today, and Everything. Choose Everything to delete all history.
- There is a second button titled Details. Clicking on this button reveals another set of options. Here you choose what type of internet history to erase. The options include:
Browsing and Download History: Select this to erase all visited web pages and all download history.
Form and Search History: Select this to delete all history of any words you have typed into search boxes or filled in any forms.
Cookies: Select this to delete all cookies, tracking or otherwise.
Cache: Select this to delete any info that web pages save to your computer to allow them load much faster whenever you visit them.
Active Logins: Select this to logout from any and all websites to which you may be logged into.
Offline Website Data: Select this to delete any information saved by websites to your computer that allow them to work offline.
Site Preferences: Select this to erase any customization you may have performed on any websites.
- When you have selected your preferred options, click on the Clear Now button to delete the selected internet history.
To Delete Browsing History By Web Page or Website
This set of steps will allow you delete only a particular web page or website:
- Click on Ctrl + H to display the History sidebar. This sidebar offers a search box that allows you search for a particular web history. There is also a View button that allows you sort the displayed search results by date, site, date and site, most visited and last visited.
- The history displayed corresponds to the option chosen using the View button. Also, if you have searched for a particular history, that history will be displayed.
- If you have selected a view that sorts the history according to time such as date, site, or date and site, you can simply right-click on any of the time groupings e.g. Older than 6 months and select Delete to erase all history under that time selection.
- Under all selections you can do the following. You can right-click on individual histories and select Delete This Page to erase a single history. Also on the right-click menu is an option to Forget About This Site; clicking on this deletes all similar pages from the same website. Forget About This Site automatically deletes browsing and download history, cookies, cache, active logins, passwords, and saved form data for that website.
- If you select date and site, web pages from the same website are also grouped in a single folder. You can right-click on a folder and select Delete to remove all pages from that website. You can also select the Forget About This Site option.
However, if you like to delete your entire browsing history frequently, Firefox offers a Private Browsing mode. In this mode, the browser does not keep any record of your browsing history but any files you download or bookmarks you create are saved. To activate Private Browsing do the following:
- Click on the Open menu icon.
- On the menu that appears, click on the New Private Window icon - this icon is a mask. Doing this opens a Private Browsing window indicated by a mask icon in the top right hand corner. Alternatively, you can press Ctrl + Shift + P to do this.
- Upon closing a Private Browsing window, all history is deleted except for downloaded files and bookmarks created.
