How to Browse Anonymously on Google Chrome and Other Google Chrome Hacks
Chrome is an extremely fast and stable browser but like all things, it is not perfect. When it was launched, some people complained that it had a minimalist look and did not support extensions. Well, Chrome has come a long way since then and a lot of features have been added to it. Below are some of the ways you can make surfing using Google Chrome a lot more enjoyable.
Download Themes
Change the look of your Chrome browser with one of the many available themes. Go to https://tools.google.com/chrome/intl/en/themes/index.html. Under the tab for Themes by Google are the official Google Chrome themes. The tab for Themes by Artists displays first by default and has even better looking themes. Some really good ones are Porsche, Candies and Marc Ecko. You can also find more themes on the internet.
Add Extensions
Browser extensions used to be almost exclusive to Firefox but Google Chrome now features thousands of extensions and add-ons which greatly improve your internet surfing experience. To download extensions, go to https://chrome.google.com/extensions.
Create Shortcuts for Frequently-used Web Applications or Pages
You can always bookmark pages and find them whenever you want but Google Chrome offers an even better option for your favorite sites. When you open a web application or website, click on the Page Options icon and choose Create application shortcuts. This allows you to create a shortcut on the Desktop, Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar. Therefore, you do not have to launch your browser or search through bookmarks before using your favorite apps or sites.
Use the Google Chrome Task Manager
If your connection becomes slow or buggy, a page might be hogging your resources. Google Chrome provides a task manager that allows you to see what is in happening inside your browser. It shows open tabs, the amount of memory each tab is using and the network utilization for each of them. You can tell which tab is causing the problem and close it. You can even choose to close it right there in the task manager. To open the task manager, press Shift + Esc or right-click on an empty space on the tab bar and click on Task manager.
Protect saved passwords
When you save passwords on Google Chrome, they are stored on its password manager. You can easily access them by going to Tools>Options>Personal Stuff>Show saved passwords, but so can anybody else. Anyone who has access to your computer can see your saved passwords and this is a security risk. Protect your saved passwords by encrypting them using this free program: KeePass. This tool can be used to manage all your passwords (including browser passwords) on Windows.
Learn Shortcuts
Using your mouse for navigation and doing everything the usual way on a browser can become old and tiring. You should learn to use shortcuts; they are far cooler. Examples include:
- To quickly search any website, type the address of the site in the address bar and press Tab when the prompt appears. This will allow you to search any website without first visiting it.
- You can search Google right from the address bar. Just type in your search term and press Enter. To use other search engines in this way, right-click on the address bar and select "Edit search engines". In the dialog window that appears, choose your preferred engine and then click on the Make Default button.
Go to http://www.google.com/support/chrome/bin/answer.py?answer=95743&ctx=tip for more Google Chrome shortcuts.
Use the Incognito Mode
Chrome was the first browser to introduce a private mode for surfing the internet where you could visit websites without leaving traces on your computer. It is called the Incognito Mode. To use this feature, press Ctrl + Shift + N to open an incognito window or you may click on Tools>New incognito window. You can open links in incognito windows by right-clicking and choosing Open link in incognito window
Become Anonymous on Chrome
Would you like to surf the web like a ghost? Download UnChrome and run it on your computer. It removes a unique identifier on your Chrome installation which may used to identify you. This identifier is not necessary for Google Chrome to function.
