How to Select the Right Google Ads for your Website

Learn How to Make Google Display Ads that Match the Content on your Website
If the ads displayed on your website do not match your content, you are losing money. For websites with little traffic, it is very important that you make the most of the visitors you get by making sure your ads match your content. How can you do this? The following are two ways provided by Google's AdSense program:
Competitive Ad Filter
This tool allows you to block individual ads by determining their destination URLs (web addresses) and having them filtered. To do this, open an Internet Explorer browser window (the AdSense Preview Tool mentioned below only works on Windows versions of IE 6 and above) and follow this procedure:
- Log into your Google AdSense account and click on the AdSense Setup tab.
- On the AdSense Setup page, select Competitive Ad Filter. This will display a page that shows the filter box where you enter the URLs to be blocked. If you already know the destination URL of an ad you may enter it here. Click the "Save changes" button to confirm.
- If you do not know the destination address of an ad, you may want to click on the ad to find out which page it leads to but Google does not allow you to click on your own ads. So how do you determine its URL?
- One way to do this is to use the Google Publisher Toolbar.Google Publisher Toolbar and follow the instructions provided.
- You can find out the destination web addresses of specific ads using this tool. Copy and paste them into the filter box and click "Save changes". The Google Publisher Toolbar will enable you see what ads are displayed on your content in all countries around the world i.e. you can see what ads are shown to people in India even if you live in the United States.
Ad Review Center
The Ad Review Center allows you to prevent certain categories of ads from ever appearing on your website using its category filtering block.
- Log into your Google AdSense account and click on AdSense Setup tab.
- On the AdSense Setup page, select Ad Review Center. This displays a page with the ad categories which can be filtered.
- Check the box beside the ad category or categories that you do not want to be shown on your content. Click the "Submit" button to confirm.
- Google AdSense provides estimates of the percentage of total revenue each ad category has generated for your site. Thus, if the ad category you want to block already displays on your website and generates a substantial part of your AdSense income, you may decide not to block it.
- To use the Ad Review Center in more ways than this, you have to enable it. Click on the Ad Review Center link at the top of the Competitive Ad Filter page to do so.
The above is absolutely important if you want to make more money from the ads on your website. This concerns website owners whose main income model is Google AdSense and freelance writers who submit articles to sites where they make money from displayed ads.
Not every ad that appears on your content has the potential to earn revenue for you. In a lot of cases, the ads you see on a website or article are not related in any way to the information contained on the webpage. This is usually so when the webpage in question does not get a lot of traffic. When websites get a lot of traffic, the AdSense bot learns to show ads that are highly relevant to the site's content. Still, in some situations sites with large traffic may show non-relevant ads. An example is when ads are highly competitive and bid very high in the AdWords program.
